Second place here is a compliment rather than a consolation. Northwest prints its prices where buyers can read them, staffs its phone lines with employees, and built the business around client address privacy well before the rest of the field worked out that privacy sells. Now the qualifications. That free first year is tied to formation work, so ordering agent service on its own puts you at $125 for the year. The reduced $100 rate is gated behind five or more state registrations, a bar that a business existing solely in South Dakota will never reach. Budget $125 annually, which runs $26 above our figure at every renewal.

3. BetterLegal

BetterLegal holds the lowest published renewal on this page at $90 a year, verified against the company's published wording in July 2026. What that review could not turn up was any statement of how the opening year bills. On a page built entirely around published pricing, that absence is the whole reason a fully documented $99 finishes above a partially documented $90. Reach their checkout, read the first-year terms, and if those terms suit you then genuinely inexpensive coverage is what you have found.

4. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer charges $125 a year and charges it identically at every membership tier, with no teaser rate scheduled to lapse on you later. That is more pricing discipline than this category usually manages, and it deserves saying plainly. The reservation concerns fit rather than honesty. The product is a legal subscription that happens to include agent service, which makes its worth depend on how often you genuinely open the document library or book the attorney consultations. If a South Dakota address and prompt scanning is the entire job description, $125 buys a great deal of shelf you will never reach for.

5. ZenBusiness

The number that matters with ZenBusiness is the second one. Standalone agent service opens at $99 plus state fees, then settles at $199 for every year thereafter. Since you will spend far more years renewing than signing up, $199 belongs in the budget. The software is genuinely well made and this paragraph does not dispute it. Well made costs an extra hundred dollars annually against a flat $99, and it costs that again for as long as you stay.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile)

Plenty of owners still call this company Incfile. Form your LLC through Bizee and agent coverage arrives at no charge for somewhere between three and twelve months, the length depending on which package was purchased. If Bizee was going to handle the filing regardless, those months are money kept. The discipline they demand is a calendar entry, because standalone service takes over at $149 a year once the bundle expires, and a free service has a way of never announcing that it stopped being free.

7. LegalZoom

At $249 a year on automatic renewal, LegalZoom carries the highest flat rate on this page, and our July 2026 check located nothing resembling a first-year discount. The premium buys the most recognized name in online legal services. It buys nothing extra from South Dakota, which holds a $249 agent and a $90 agent to precisely the same duties under SDCL ch. 59-11: an actual street address in the state, availability through business hours, and prompt handoff of whatever gets served. Recognition is what the additional money purchases, not compliance.

8. Swyft Filings

The $149 Swyft advertises is a quarterly charge. Carried across twelve months it lands near $596, the steepest effective cost on this list, and our review found no introductory rate softening the landing. Quarterly billing also does a tidy job of disguising the size of the yearly total, splitting one uncomfortable figure into four comfortable ones, which is worth naming out loud. A single year of Swyft coverage costs roughly what six years of ours does.

9. Inc Authority

Year one is free. Year two goes unstated. In July 2026 we read their FAQ, their premium package pages, and their homepage without locating a renewal price anywhere in print, which ordinarily means the figure surfaces at checkout or during a sales call. A ranking sorted by published pricing has to seat a company that publishes none of it at the bottom. The missing number is the review.

What SDCL 59-11 Expects of Whoever Takes the Job

South Dakota runs registered agents through SDCL ch. 59-11, its enactment of the Model Registered Agents Act, with appointment handled at 59-11-6, the vocabulary set at 59-11-2, and the LLC act making agent details a required line of your organizing paperwork at 47-34A-203(a)(3). Three appointments satisfy the chapter. A commercial registered agent is one listed with the state under 59-11-7 and identified on filings by a CRA number, which is the category we occupy. A noncommercial registered agent is any other individual or entity carrying a South Dakota address. The third route rewards a careful read, because it is easy to mistake for permission to appoint the company itself.

It is not that. What 59-11-6(2)(b) permits is putting a job title on the line where a name usually goes, so that service of process is routed to whoever occupies that position on the day papers arrive. The appointment attaches to the seat rather than to the person filling it, which is why it can survive a staffing change without a fresh filing. The entity is still never listed as its own agent.

What none of the three routes changes is the address. Each of them requires a real South Dakota street address, or else a rural route box number, with a PO box standing alone refused outright. Somebody has to be reachable there through ordinary business hours. That single line is where most do-it-yourself arrangements come undone. If the company does not exist yet, the same body of law prices the entrance: Articles of Organization cost $150 filed online and $165 on paper under SDCL 47-34A-203, rising to $200 when the articles authorize series, with the fee amount fixed by SDCL 47-34A-212. South Dakota does not number its business forms, so any guide handing you a form number for a South Dakota filing is describing a document the state never issued.

South Dakota draws a steady flow of owners who have never driven through it, attracted by a state that levies no income tax and keeps its entity records comparatively spare. For those owners the agent is not one vendor among several. It is the whole physical presence the company has inside the state, the single address a court, a bank, or the Secretary of State can reach. Reliability stops being a nicety at that point, and the shopping criteria shift accordingly toward continuity and speed of delivery rather than the smallest number on a page.

South Dakota titles it a Statement of Change, with the full heading reaching the registered office, the registered agent, or both at once, and there is no code to memorize because this state identifies its forms by name. Submitted through the state's online system it costs $10, the statutory charge set at SDCL 59-11-3(3). Mail the paper version instead and it becomes $25, the difference being a $15 surcharge South Dakota attaches to paper filings, which is why the printed PDF shows the larger figure on its face. Your departing agent votes on none of this and signs nothing. Anniversary Month Is the Whole Compliance Calendar

South Dakota's recurring obligation is an annual report keyed to the month the entity was originally filed. The window opens on the first day of that month and shuts on the last, with no grace period appended, so a report still unfiled on the first of the following month is delinquent. Filing online costs $55 and the paper route costs $70, that same $15 paper surcharge at work again. A delinquent report picks up a $50 late fee, and continued silence leads to administrative dissolution by the Secretary of State, generally around two months past due, under SDCL 47-34A-809, with the report itself governed by SDCL 47-34A-211.

Two consequences follow from an anniversary-month deadline. It falls differently for every company, so no industry-wide date exists to jog anyone's memory, and one month is a short window in which to notice a miss.
